How to choose a back protector for snowboarding?

A back protector can prevent crushing or misalignment of the vertebrae, protect you from bruises, abrasions, and in some cases even from rib fractures. The construction of the protector is capable of distributing the impact force over a larger area, thus reducing its effect. These benefits are useful even when riding slowly and safely, as you may find yourself in an unfortunate collision due to other riders. What should you focus on when choosing a spine protector?

Type of protector – You can choose protectors with straps and a lumbar belt or back protectors with a vest. The latter fits the body better and also serves as a thermal layer. However, the first type, when selected in the correct size and properly adjusted, will provide sufficient protection.

Material of the protector – Models with a plastic shell are heavier, less comfortable, but provide better protection, especially during falls on sharp edges. Modern protectors with special foam offer low weight and high comfort. In terms of protection, both materials are now comparable.

Gender – Protectors are designed to account for anatomical differences between men and women. Women's back protectors are typically wider at the waist and narrower at the shoulders. The protector should cover from the cervical vertebrae to the upper part of the tailbone and should follow the natural shape of the spine. There must be no space between the body and the protector.

Thermoregulation – Back protectors can impair thermoregulation in the back area. Therefore, choose products with a well-developed ventilation system. Functional materials on the underside of the protector will help with moisture-wicking from the body.
