How to choose inline skates
Inline skating has become one of the most popular recreational sports, and the variety of skates has grown accordingly, offering plenty of options for both beginners and experienced skaters. The right inline skates will elevate your ride, making it more comfortable and enabling you to perform better.
Wheel size – Smaller wheels with a diameter up to 80 mm are slower and ideal for beginners. Medium-sized wheels between 80 and 90 mm are faster and suitable for intermediate skaters. Wheels larger than 90 mm are fast, and you should be confident in your skating skills before using them.
Wheel hardness – Marked on a scale from 75A to 90A. Softer wheels under 80A are slower but offer better shock absorption and grip. Harder wheels will let you skate faster, but at the expense of comfort.
Bearings – Bearings ensure smooth wheel rotation, providing an easier and faster ride. They are graded according to various standards, most commonly ABEC1 to ABEC9. Grades 1-3 are used in cheaper skates, ABEC7 is sufficient for most riders, and ABEC9 is for those seeking truly fast rides.
Frame length and material – Longer frames are harder to control, but offer better stability at high speeds. Shorter frames are easier to handle but less stable. Materials range from durable plastic, suitable for beginners and recreational skating, to aluminum for sport skaters and carbon for racing skates.
Skate size – Try on skates in the afternoon with thick socks. You should feel the arch supported, the outer part of your foot stabilized, and your ankle providing balance. Your toes shouldn’t be bent but can lightly touch the toe of the skate or have a small gap.
