How to choose skateboarding pads?
Pads are a key part of skateboard equipment that help prevent injuries while riding. When selecting your protectors, consider the following factors:
Helmet – Choose a helmet with ventilation holes for longer, more comfortable rides. If you’re constantly performing tricks and learning new moves, pick a helmet without holes for extra durability. For ramp riders, opt for a Hard-shell construction. Check the padding; if removable, it’s easier to clean when dirty. Size is easy to determine at home by measuring your head circumference, but be sure to test for comfort and mobility when trying it on in-store. All cycling helmets meet safety standards, but for skateboarding, “coconut” helmets are recommended—these larger, sturdier helmets with smaller vents offer more protection.
Wrist Protectors – The palms take the brunt of most falls, often resulting in abrasions. Wrist protectors with a plastic shield on the bottom help prevent this. If you want extra wrist protection from bruising, choose protectors with plastic on both the top and bottom of the palm. Most wrist protectors allow for free movement of the fingers without restricting your motion.
Knee and Elbow Pads – Anatomically shaped plastic pads ensure comfort during your ride. The outer layer is made of foam padding with varying thickness. Thicker padding offers better shock absorption but less movement space, while thinner padding allows for more flexibility but less protection against impacts.
Size of pads – Pad sizes are the same as your clothing size. For kids, sizes are marked by age: XXS for children under 7, XS for children between 7-10 years, and S for older children.
