The GORE-TEX® membrane is an extremely thin layer of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE). It has over 9 billion pores per square inch. It's these pores that give the GORE-TEX® fabric its characteristics. The GORE-TEX® membrane itself is only 0.01 millimetres thick. It's bonded between high-performance lining and shell textiles, creating the GORE-TEX® laminate.
Waterproof: The microscopic pores of the membrane are 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet, which means that no rain can penetrate it. This is what makes the GORE-TEX® membrane waterproof.
Windproof: The membrane's structure is similar to that of a hedge. The wind is caught up entirely in the branching and thus averted from the body. This is what makes the GORE-TEX® membrane windproof.
Breathable: The pores are 700 times larger than a water vapour molecule which means
perspiration passes right through. This is what makes the GORE-TEX® membrane breathable.
Garments made with GORE-TEX® Z-liner constructions offer excellent comfort in a wide range of styles. A GORE-TEX® membrane is bonded to a lightweight fabric and the liner is freely suspended between the outer fabric and the lining.
Garments made with GORE-TEX® LTD constructions provide a good combination of durable waterproof protection, comfort and versatility through a combination of soft and high-performance face textiles, membranes and special lining.
2 layer insulated structure: In order to use the GORE-TEX® membrane in the manufacture of a finished product, it first has to be bonded between high-performance lining and outer textiles. This combination of membrane and support material is referred to as the GORE-TEX® laminate.
2 layer construction: Ideal for a wide range of outdoor activities, with this construction a GORE-TEX® membrane is bonded to the outer fabric only. The benefit: the separate lining inside improves wearing comfort and versatility. This construction can be combined with insulation, keeping the wearer dry and warm. Available in a wide variety of outer fabrics, garments made with 2-layer GORE-TEX® fabric are the versatile solution for style, comfort and protection against the elements.
3 layer construction: Unlike the 2-layer construction, this construction bonds the GORE-TEX® membrane to both the outer fabric and the inner lining. The benefit: no movement between the layers, which means less wear and tear, and enhanced durability.
Every stitch in a seam is a potential leak. That‘s why for, maximum waterproof protection, GORE-SEAM® tape is used. Every seam in GORE-TEX® garments, footwear and gloves is sealed by specially trained manufacturers in certified factories using patented equipment from Gore. All GORE-TEX® garments have an ultra-thin treatment called DWR - a durable water repellent polymer - applied to the outermost fabric layer so that water beads up and rolls off rather than soaks in.
