The first important factor in choosing the right floorball stick is its side. It is determined by the hand that is closer to the blade when holding the floorball stick.

Another important factor in choosing a floorball stick is its length. It must not be too short, as this reduces the player's reach, plus it puts the player's body in an unnatural position and can cause back injuries. On the other hand, a long stick is a hindrance and the ball is very difficult to control.

Floorball stick hardness

The hardness or flex is determined by applying a 30 kg weight to the centre of the shaft. Therefore, the higher the number, the softer the stick.

Choosing the right floorball stick, including its length and stiffness, is essential for precise ball control and accurate shots. The curve of the blade depends on the hand you place lower on the shaft. To get the most out of your floorball stick, it must have the proper stiffness for your playing style. A simple guideline to consider: the harder the stick, the slower the shot, but with greater control. Material also plays a key role in selecting the best stick for you.

How to choose a floorball stick?

A floorball stick consists of two main parts. The shaft, often referred to by its English name, forms the stick’s body and ends with a blade, which is critical for ball control and shooting. Additionally, the grip, or wrap, covers almost half the shaft, providing a secure hold and preventing the stick from slipping, even with sweaty hands.

  • Blade side: The most significant difference between floorball sticks is the side you hold during the game. This corresponds to the curve of the blade and is chosen as either right or left, based on your bottom hand.

  • Length: The ideal stick length is determined by ensuring the stick reaches your belly button when upright. A short stick can lead to back strain, while a long stick reduces ball control.

  • Shaft stiffness: Softer sticks are suitable for younger, lighter players or beginners to support ball control. Harder sticks are best for experienced players who aim for faster, more powerful shots.

  • Material: Basic shafts are made from plastic, but composite and carbon (sometimes mixed with composite) are common in higher-end models. Carbon shafts are lightweight, durable, and often feature advanced technologies.

  • Blade: Besides choosing the correct side (right or left), it’s crucial to select the right curvature and stiffness. Medium-hard blades are the most common.

  • Grip profile and wrap: Most grips are round, but some players prefer oval or even angular profiles to minimize stick rotation in hand. A quality wrap also enhances grip security and can come as pre-wrapped, in one piece, or as a combination.
